Il CRS è stato istituito con la legge n. 399 del 30 novembre 1989 (PDF) col fine istituzionale di
".. svolgere, in autonomia scientifica, ....con specifici progetti, ricerche sulla sismicità e sulla sismogenesi dell'Italia nord-orientale, gestendo e sviluppando inoltre la connessa rete di rilevamento sismico anche per fini di protezione civile. "
Nei campi di sua competenza il CRS svolge inoltre: attività applicativa; studi e ricerche sulle tecnologie di acquisizione, trasmissione e trattamento del segnale sismico, studi e ricerche per l'affinamento del modello sismotettonico dell'Italia nord-orientale.
The CRS was established by Law No 399 of November 30th 1989. (PDF) with the institutional aim of
"... carrying out, in scientific autonomy, ... with specific projects, seismicity research on the seismogenesis of north-eastern Italy, also managing and developing the related seismic detection network also for civil protection purposes. "
Within its fields of competence the CRS also carries out: application activities, studies and research on the acquisition technologies, transmission and treatment of the seismic signal, studies and research for refinement of the seismotectonic model of northeastern Italy.
